I had actually heard of Payne Whitney long before I knew about Marilyn Monroe's connection to the Psychiatric Clinic named after him, thanks to this New Yorker cartoon, which I had already blogged about, almost six years ago - I commented on the inscrutability of the caption, and mentioned I looked up Payne Whitney and discovered he was a rich guy. Payne also has a mansion, a street and a gym named after him.
I still don't get the humor of this cartoon though - is it supposed to be funny because blue collar workers are talking about the lineage of a rich guy?
