Edward Einhorn's theory of paying actors

What he actually said was:

Well, I think the theory behind it all is that the actors get the glory of having being on stage, which is why they are usually happy to work for free...

No doubt the actors who participated in his theatre company's productions can attest to Edward Einhorn's dedication to his theory of actor payments.

As the operator of a theatre production company, Einhorn's "theory" is so utterly, transparently self-serving that it would be hysterically funny except for the fact that hard-working, dedicated, talented actors are getting screwed.

Of course Einhorn's exploitation of non-Equity actors isn't uncommon in the off-off Broadway theatre world. He's just less ashamed of it than other exploiters.

Einhorn is so unashamed that he entered the entire "(actors) are usually happy to work for free" email into the court record as Exhibit 4A.

He also tried to use reviews of his work as exhibits. Judge Kaplan asked: "Since when are newspaper clippings evidence?"

I see that Einhorn is advertising for actors and a tango dancer for his Havel festival on playbill.com. He is offering no pay - of course but "Anyone filling such a role would be given a Festival Pass, allowing you to see all the productions in the Havel Festival for free." It was the very least he could do. So that's what he did.

And then there was the incident of Edward Einhorn and the Equity stage manager, fully documented by email. But I'm saving that one for another time.
